On the way back to her office, Emelia passed Wyatt in the hall. She still felt dazed from her earlier experience with Elden and was grinning like an idiot as she walked along, attempting to absorb the fact that she had agreed—did I really agree? —to have dinner with Elden the next night. She didn’t register that Wyatt was there until he spoke, “How was your first day?”

“Oh!” Emelia startled. “Hi Wyred. It was . . . good. Really good.”

“Is that why you’re grinning like the cat that got caught with the canary in its mouth?”

Emelia blushed and rushed to cover, “I have no idea what you’re talking about!”

Wyatt chuckled. “We really need to work on your tells! Consider taking Falsehoods and Coverings when you complete Prognosticative Analysis.”

She blushed again and laughed. Jokingly, she said, “I really don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Yes. Right.” Wyatt laughed. “How did you like your instructors?”

Emelia caught the tone in his voice. He’s up to something. “You know who they were, yes?”

“Yes. I am well aware,” Wyatt said. “Keenen Blankenshire is the professor and Elden Tanner is the expert.”

Emelia nodded, wondering if Wyatt had somehow planned all this. There was an interesting note in his energy that led her to believe that it was possible.

“And so?” Wyatt prompted.

“They are excellent instructors. I’m excited to learn from Elden, given that he has the most valiant reputation in the entire department, and possibly the whole of the government.”

“Yes!” Wyatt nodded enthusiastically. “He is a gem. Just as you are. I’m grateful you felt comfortable with their instructional style.”

“Elden has invited me to dinner tomorrow night,” Emelia blurted unexpectedly, not sure why she was telling Wyatt this, but it seemed like he needed to know.

“Wonderful,” Wyatt said, a look of satisfaction crossing his face. Emelia eyed him, not sure what was going on, but certain that something was. He finished, “Let me know how the date goes.”

Emelia immediately jumped on that one, “It’s not a date! It’s only dinner.”

“Uh-huh,” Wyatt responded in an uncharacteristically improper way, nodding his head and laughing as he continued on his way. “Whatever, Emelia. Enjoy the rest of your day and I look forward to hearing the update on Wednesday morning regarding the outcome of your date. Although, I won’t need the intimate details.”

His taunting laughter trailed after him and Emelia stared at his retreating form, confused, yet again, and blushing about what had just happened.
